Salix "Hakuro-nishiki"

The Salix 'Hakuro-nishiki' bonsai is the colourist of the bonsai world, and this six-year-old, 40 cm tree carries that reputation with real flair in the Moyogi (informal upright) style. Its trunk flows upward with the loose, easy grace of a willow growing beside a stream, bending softly before settling into a well-placed apex. Each spring the canopy erupts in dappled new leaves brushed with rose-pink and cream — a blush that no other variegated bonsai wears so boldly — maturing through summer into a cool marble of green and white. When the leaves finally drop, the bare season reveals yet another costume: slender shoots in warm salmon and orange-red that keep the composition alive through winter. Willows are famously fast and thirsty, so this Japanese bonsai thickens, heals and refines quickly, repaying the grower with visible change every month of the growing season. For anyone wishing to buy Salix bonsai that delivers three distinct seasonal looks plus genuinely rapid progress, this dappled willow is an unbeatable starting point.
